The 2007 TARC competition is underway!!
This e-mail contains important information for all team members. Please read through it carefully and share the information with your team.
TARC Program Schedule
As in years past, we have carefully outlined a schedule of activities (listed on www.rocketcontest.org, on the sidebar under 2007 Program Schedule) that will keep your team on track throughout the coming months. In order to be successful in this contest, your team should stick to this schedule as much as possible. To meet the scheduled milestone of at least one test flight of your TARC rocket design by February 1, 2006, your team has to work on your design over the holiday break, despite the cold weather!
By now you should have completed the following:
" Ensure all team data (names, e-mail, etc.) on file with AIA is correct
" Join TARC electronic forum featured on Yahoo. Go to http://groups.yahoo.com/group/NARTARC/ to join this group.
" Download the Team Handbook & Rules and the Frequently Asked Questions from www.rocketcontest.org, and have all team members read all information.
" Assign team responsibilities (such as project manager, airframe, propulsion & ignition, launch system, fundraising etc.)
" Get a mentor (see the list of available NAR mentors at www.nar.org.)
o If you have a NAR Mentor please let us knows who it is by emailing us their name & email address. This information will also then appear on the Team Information webpage. Be sure to include your Team Number in the subject line and send to rocketcontest@aia-aerospace.org.
o If you would like to be connected with a NAR Mentor or have been unable to locate one near you, please also contact us ASAP.
" If you are a new team, watch the instructional DVD provided as part of your registration materials.
" Begin research on rocket parts supply sources (starting with the two official TARC vendors listed in the TARC Handbook and at www.rocketcontest.org.)
" Develop a plan to raise required funds for purchase of rocket supplies (and hopefully for later travel to the fly offs), covering at least 2-3 rockets and motors for 6-10 test and qualification flights.
" Purchase inexpensive one-stage rocket kit to familiarize team with rocket building & flying, and build it. A good basic kit specifically for TARC teams is available from Aerospace Specialty Products (see the TARC Handbook for contact information.)
" Locate a place to fly rockets (or a nearby NAR launch to attend and fly at, see the "Launch Windows" calendar at www.nar.org or contact the nearest NAR club or "section" listed at this same website)
A word about Mentors:
Those teams that have competed in the past know how valuable and critical having a NAR mentor can be to the successful design, production and flight of a rocket. Teams that are new to TARC, especially those with little to no prior rocketry experience, will find that they can learn a lot about the basics of model rocketry from the volunteer members of the National Association of Rocketry (NAR), America's largest and oldest association of sport rocket fliers. NAR has a nationwide network of local clubs, called "sections," with experienced rocketeers standing by to provide advice and make their launch sites available for your flights. Many adult NAR members will be mentors and available to assist individual teams in their local area. These local club sections are listed on the NAR web site and so is a list of mentors, under the Team America section on the NAR web site. If there is not a mentor in your local area, you will be able contact one in nearby, maybe even another state, using phone or e-mail. These great volunteers can provide much information & guidance even if they cannot help you in person. Please visit the NAR website at www.nar.org for more information.
