Subject: Last Minute Reminders for All Finalists
Hello! We hope this finds you all well & and eagerly preparing for this weekend's festivities.
Just a few reminders:
Attached to this email is the press release being sent out to all national & local targeted media outlets to encourage the news media to cover the contest on Saturday. We encourage you to circulate it as well and contact your local TV stations and tell them that you are competing in the National Finals of the world's largest rocket contest. This is important to do because it will increase the chances of your team being featured on national TV on Saturday and possibly on TV back home.
Rocket Reminders:
1. The rocket that you present at Check-in at the finals must have been previously test-flown successfully. There are no places to test-fly in the DC area this week and no test-flights are permitted at the finals site.
2. The rocket must be marked with the location of its Center of Pressure (use your Space CAD or RockSIM programs to calculate) so we can verify stability at Check-in, if this is in doubt.
3. You cannot carry rocket motors on airplanes, nor can you legally ship them yourself as a private individual, by UPS/FedEx/USPS or any other means. If you are not driving to the finals and need motors on arrival, follow the instructions in your acceptance letter and advance-order them from Hangar11 Hobbies.
4. You need to be at the pre-flight briefing at Battlefield High School, Haymarket, VA, which will be starting promptly at 7:30 PM Friday evening. It may take over 30 minutes to drive there from the motels in Manassas during Friday evening rush hour. Arrive early (but no earlier than 6 PM) to get your registration packet, credentials, etc. and to pick up any rocket equipment you shipped ahead to Aurora Flight Sciences or motors you advance-ordered from Hangar11 Hobbies.
A few things to keep in mind when packing that will keep you & your team happy and healthy throughout the day:
1. Sunscreen - Even if it is slightly cloudy or overcast, we will be outside all day.
2. Portable or pop-up tents - There is plenty of flat open space outside the team area for you to stake out when your team is not preparing to launch or launching. If you are able to bring your own shade, it is advisable as there is no permanent shade in the observation areas. That being said, tents will not be permitted on Members Hill but rather can be set up on the flat grassy areas nearby to the student prep areas.
3. Bottled water, coolers, but please no glass - Each student will get a blue ticket to redeem to two (2) bottles of water & a yellow ticket for lunch. Concessions will be available at the field.
If you should need or want to purchase anything once you arrive here on Friday, there is a Wal-Mart located in Manassas, right off of Balls Ford Road & Route 234 - Sudley Road, that is very close to all the hotels.
Please let us know if we can be of assistance with any additional last minute questions.
