HAMILTON -- Six boys from Our Lady of Sorrows/St. Anthony's Boy Scout Troop 38, Mercerville, are members of the only team from New Jersey to qualify for the Team America Rocketry Challenge national finals Saturday in The Plains, Va.
Nearly 7,000 students in 678 teams attempted the challenge, but only the top 100 teams will compete in the national contest.
Troop 38 members are Eagle Scouts Keith Kiggins and Thomas Lakatos; Life Scouts Brian Buchalski and Andrew Palmer; Star Scout Daniel Sclavi; and First Class Scout Andrew Potts.
The team was sponsored by Hanger 11 Hobbies, PMC Services and Kitchen Tune Up. Troop 38 is chartered by the Boy Scouts of America to Our Lady of Sorrows/St. Anthony Roman Catholic Church through Central NJ Council in Monmouth Junction. The church has chartered Troop 38 for more than 10 years and sponsors Cub Scout Pack 38 for younger boys.
Team supervisor Brian Buchalski said the contest is an opportunity for students to have hands-on lessons in aerodynamics in a non-classroom setting.
The contest requires each team to design, build and test a model rocket that will carry a raw egg to an altitude of 800 feet, and return it to the ground unbroken, with a total flight time of 45 seconds. The top 10 teams will share a prize pool of $60,000 in savings bonds and cash.
