Middle School's Rocket Club Soars To Nationals
ORLANDO, Fla. -- One Central Florida middle school is teaching its students to shoot for the stars, and they're doing it better than anyone expected.
The success Howard Middle School is having with its Rocket Club proves that when it comes to education, the sky is the limit.
The students are launching rockets to perhaps launch their careers, WESH 2 News reported.
And the six members of the Howard Middle School Science Explorer Club just did the unheard of.
"We were all in shock. We were just like, it was fantastic," said teacher Susan Leeds.
What they did was qualify for the Team America Rocketry Challenge. And that's not easy.
"There are 100 teams invited to this. They're one of three or four middle schools in the whole country," said Robb Haskins, who mentors the team.
Howard Middle School took off past more celebrated schools in the area to earn the honor.
"We're really committed to our students. We really want them to be prepared for real world opportunities," Leeds said.
"It doesn't matter where you come from, what you do or what your background is. Kids have talent, they have strong minds and all they need is the right opportunity and right kind of guidance and they can achieve," Haskins said.
In a few weeks, they'll be heading to Virginia to participate in the national championships with a rocket that goes up 800 feet. Until then, the best advice they have is to go launch a rocket if you really want to learn.
Howard Middle will be the only school representing Central Florida.
