Model rocket team hopes to soar in contest
A model rocket team from West Boca Raton High School is hoping to put on a show next month at a national finals competition.
On May 20, the nine students will represent Palm Beach County at the Team America Rocketry Contest, billed as the world's largest model rocket contest. The fly-offs, featuring 100 finalist teams selected from 678 entrants, will be held in Plains, Va.
For the contest, students must design, build and test a model rocket that can fly for as close to 45 seconds and reach 800 feet with a payload of one raw egg before safely parachuting to the ground with the egg unbroken. The top 10 teams share $60,000 in savings bonds and cash. Physics teacher Mark Bjorkland said students get a thrill learning aerodynamics. The team is looking for sponsors to help with hotel and travel expenses.
