Team America Rocketry Challenge

 

Celebrating Ten Years

2002-2012

 

 

This year’s competition marked the ten year anniversary of the Team America Rocketry Challenge. Over the past ten years we have been grateful to receive so many wonderful and talented students, charitable sponsors, and dedicated volunteers who have helped make this competition a national highlight within the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) field.

Four out of every five students who have participated in the Team America Rocketry Challenge over the past ten years have gone on to study science, technology, engineering or mathematics as part of their higher learning.  Subsequently, many of these same students continue to pursue a career in a technical science after earning their degree. 

The competition also attracts significant diversity and talent to the science, technology, engineering and mathematics pipeline.

On Saturday May 12th student rocketeers representing 29 states and the Virgin Islands kicked off our tenth year by launching rockets in The Plains, Virginia to compete for $73,000 in prize money, a Raytheon sponsored trip to the Farnborough International Airshow, and the title of National Champion.

It is these young minds which will encompass the workforce of tomorrow and we are privileged and thankful to have been able to shape the future for so many young minds.

The 2012 Challenge:

  • Design, build and fly a rocket to a precise altitude of 800 feet.
  • In  43-47 seconds of total flight time.
  • Return a payload of two raw eggs with a parachute recovery system.
  • The rockets total launch weight cannot exceed 650 grams.
  • The rocket motor must have total impulse limit of 80 N-second.

Scoring:

As in golf, the low score wins - zero is a perfect score.

The scoring formula is broken down as:  Altitude above or below 800 ft.+(seconds under 43 or over 47)*3 = score (Altitude is measured with an onboard altimeter).

The flight also must return both raw eggs uncracked.

Example:
[Altitude is 796 feet (4)] + [Time is 47.3 seconds (.3) * 3] = Score (4.9)
